Telegraph Agent and HyperPilot obtained type approval from DNV AS ~To achieve autonomous operation of marine vessels through vessel speed optimization~
2024.09.13
Nabtesco Corporation (headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Kazumasa Kimura) and its consolidated subsidiary Deep Sea Technologies, Inc. (DeepSea) have obtained type approval for their respective new products TELEGRAPH AGENT™ and HyperPilot™ from DNV AS, the world’s leading classification society in Norway.
It is currently common that the vessel’s crew adjusts the RPM of the main engine by manually operating the handle of the bridge maneuvering system to control vessel speed according to the voyage schedule. However, manual operation sometimes fails to maintain the planned vessel speed due to external factors, such as weather (wind direction, current), affecting the time of arrival and fuel consumption. To maintain an optimal vessel speed, frequent handle operation is also required, which is a burden on the crew.
Nabtesco introduced its first collaboration system co-developed with DeepSea, which the Company acquired in 2023. “HyperPilot” receives the optimal route and vessel speed plan provided by the Optimal Operation Support Services one of DeepSea’s major software applications, and outputs the vessel speed proposed based on the current vessel position to Nabtesco’s “Telegraph Agent”. This allows the engine’s RPM, which corresponds to the planned vessel speed, to be automatically adjusted in real time.
With the acquisition of type approval, the Group will expand the offerings of maritime solutions that enable autonomous vessel navigation at an optimal speed to reduce crew workload, fuel consumption, and GHG emissions.

■ About Nabtesco
Nabtesco was established through the integration of Teijin Seiki Co., Ltd. and NABCO Ltd. in 2003. Based on its unique motion control technology, Nabtesco manufactures components for machines to support the automation of production facilities and to provide safety, comfort and a sense of security for land, sea and air transportation.
Nabtesco started the marine vessel equipment business in 1950 and now has a market share of about 50% in Japan and about 40% in the world for marine vessel engine remote control systems, which represent its core product in the business. The company also offers control equipment for auxiliary propulsion systems, electronic governor systems, and electronically controlled hydraulic valves for use in electronically controlled engines. It has marine vessel equipment production bases in the city of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, the city of Busan in South Korea and the city of Shanghai in China and also has service bases for the equipment in Singapore and the Netherlands.
Nabtesco acquired Deep Sea Technologies, Inc. (DeepSea), a Greek start-up company with world-leading AI technology, in 2023 and has promoted digital transformation (DX) in the maritime industry by combining its marine engine control systems with DeepSea’s maritime solutions in vessel condition monitoring (through its “Cassandra” platform) and voyage optimization (through its “Pythia” platform).
